The drugs were found in a container of bananas.
Russian law enforcers have foiled an attempt to import 820 kilograms of Latin American cocaine into the country, the Federal Customs Service (FCS) reported. Briquettes with the drug were found in the port of St. Petersburg in a container with bananas. This is the largest batch of cocaine intercepted this year. Its value on the black market is estimated at 12 billion rubles ($133 million).
The FCS specified that the operation was carried out with the participation of the FSB. Before that, the officers received information "from foreign colleagues" that one of the South American groups was planning to organize a smuggling channel of cocaine supplies to Russia, and therefore thoroughly checked each cargo from this region with the use of service dogs.
A total of 820 briquettes were seized. A criminal case was opened on smuggling of narcotic drugs on a particularly large scale (paragraph b, part 4, article 229.1 of the Criminal Code). The maximum penalty for such a crime is life imprisonment. This is the second case of detection of a cocaine shipment in the Big Port of St. Petersburg for the last two months. On May 14, the customs detained 50 kg of this drug worth 500 million rubles on a ship from Latin America, also hidden in a container with bananas.
