Lithuania Handed Belarus A Note Of Protest

Because of the Gerbera drone.

July 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania handed over a note of protest to Belarus in connection with the drone "Gerbera," which flew into the territory of the country. This was reported by the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry on its page in Facebook.

"Today, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry summoned the Deputy Ambassador of Belarus and handed him a note of protest, protesting the fact that a drone "Gerbera" illegally flew into the territory of Lithuania on July 10. The drone landed on the territory of Lithuania, about a kilometer from the border. The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry demands that Belarus give explanations for this incident as soon as possible and take measures to prevent such a thing from happening again," the press service of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry wrote on Facebook.

According to Foreign Minister Kiastutis Budrys, the fact that military drones fly into Lithuania is the responsibility of Belarus, which allows it. The minister called the appearance of "Gerbera" in Lithuania a "serious violation," Lithuania had no opportunity to quickly identify the object, so the air police had to be raised, writes Delfi.

"It is likely that this was the case (the drone was used on the battlefield in Ukraine), an investigation is underway. Of course, there are services that collect and evaluate this information, establish the whole picture - yes, this incident is probably connected with Ukraine, one of the drones used in the group flew into Lithuania. But there is one point, this time we dealt with a fake, next time it may not be a fake," Budrys said, noting that Lithuania should strengthen airspace defense.

We recall that the incident occurred on July 10. Initially, officials suspected that a Shahed drone, which Russia is using in its war against Ukraine, had crossed Lithuanian airspace. Later, the Border Guard Service reported that, according to preliminary data, the drone flew from the direction of Belarus and fell to the ground, resembling a homemade airplane in shape. The object fell near the closed border checkpoint "Shumsk", about a kilometer from the border with Belarus.

Preliminary data show that it is made of plywood and foam plastic and probably did not carry any cargo. The object poses no threat.

Later, Defense Minister Dovile Shakalene said that a Russian Gerbera drone flew into Lithuania from Belarus and crashed about a kilometer from the border.

"We can confirm that it is a Gerbera, in this case the use of such a drone can be different. We are now finding out for what purpose it was done," the minister said in an interview with radio station LRT.
