Russian Army Suffers Defeat At Pokrovskoye

Thousands of dead and deserters.

Leaked internal Russian documents reveal massive losses of the 41st Army of the Central Military District - among them thousands of dead, missing and deserters.

According to documents obtained by the project, as of June 1, 2025, at least 8,625 military personnel of Russia's 41st Combined Arms Army have died in the war against Ukraine. Another 10,491 are considered missing and 7,846 are deserters.

Of all the units, the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade from the Kemerovo region suffered the highest losses - about 2,500 dead, nearly 3,000 missing, and about the same number wanted.

"If we proceed from the pre-war number of motorized rifle brigades of the Russian Armed Forces (about 3,500 people - ed.), the 74th brigade only in these categories, excluding prisoners of war and wounded, changed two full squads," the report said.

According to the project, the army suffered these losses mainly in the area of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. A particularly high percentage of deserters is noted among mobilized prisoners.

Situation in the Pokrovsk direction

Pokrovsk and the adjacent direction in eastern Ukraine remain among the hottest points of the front. In recent days, the AFU General Staff has repeatedly reported fierce fighting in the area.

Even in early May, AFU Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky said that the situation in the Pokrovsk direction had been stabilized.

"The Pokrovsk direction is one of the most difficult sections of the front in the Russian-Ukrainian war," he said at the time.

According to him, the Ukrainian forces not only retained control over the positions, but in some areas were able to intercept the tactical initiative.

The ISW analysts believe that in the coming months the Russian army will try to encircle Pokrovsk and bypass the fortified line of the Defense Forces in Donetsk region from the west.

It is also known that the Russian army is trying to break through the defense of the Ukrainian military in the Pokrovsk direction. Fierce fighting continues there.
