CNN: Russia Could Launch A Major Summer Offensive In A Matter Of Weeks

Putin plans to use the 50-day pause announced by Trump.

Ukrainian authorities believe that Russia plans to use the 50-day pause ahead of possible new sanctions announced by US President Donald Trump to develop an offensive against key Ukrainian positions, CNN writes. The Ukrainian side estimates that some 160,000 Russian troops are already concentrated near the front line, and Moscow is believed to be preparing to launch a large-scale summer offensive in the coming days or weeks. Russian forces have made small but strategically significant gains in the past two weeks, coming close to encircling Ukrainian forces in three key towns - Pokrovsk, Konstantinovka and Kupyansk.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is confident that Ukrainian defenses could collapse within the next few months, according to two sources close to the Kremlin, according to The New York Times. With the Russian army's offensive intensifying, they said, Putin rules out the possibility of a cessation of hostilities without sweeping concessions from Kiev.

Chatham House analyst Kier Giles believes the U.S. delay plays into Putin's strategic interests and gives Moscow time for diplomacy. John Lough, head of foreign policy at the New Eurasian Strategies Center think tank, said the summer offensive has likely been underway for months and that "the Russians are certainly ramping up their efforts on the ground and in the air." "Putin is pretty confident about the progress of this campaign, recognizing that the Ukrainians are short on manpower and weapons," Lough said.

The gradual advance of Russian troops in the areas of Pokrovsk, Konstantinovka and Kupyansk is taking place with significant losses, but according to the Ukrainian monitoring project DeepState, Moscow has managed to improve its tactical position in these areas. On Wednesday, DeepState reported that Ukrainian commanders are receiving distorted information from the front lines, making it difficult to accurately assess risks and react in a timely manner: "A significant part of the enemy's successes is explained by lies in reports from the field about the real state of affairs. This is a serious problem that can lead to catastrophic consequences."
