What will Umerov be responsible for now?
Rustem Umerov has been appointed secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Before that, he headed the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to a decree signed by President Vladimir Zelensky.
Reployments in the National Security and Defense Council
Before Umerov's appointment, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council was Alexander Litvinenko, whom President Vladimir Zelensky appointed on March 26 last year. Prior to that, he had headed the Foreign Intelligence Service since July 23, 2021. And from April 4, 2014, to August 13, 2019, he was deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
Lytvinenko was the fourteenth secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
Today, however, on July 18, Zelensky issued a decree dismissing Litvinenko from his post as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
At the same time, by another decree, the president appointed Umerov to the post.
"To appoint Rustem Enverovych Umerov as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine," decree No. 496/2025 reads.
