The European Parliament Has Issued An Ultimatum To Georgia

Tbilisi must fulfill a key condition to begin EU accession.

Georgia will not be able to become a member of the European Union until its authorities change their "authoritarian course," the European Parliament said in a statement. Brussels stressed that the country's path to the commonwealth "is effectively suspended until fair elections are held."

"The European Parliament does not recognize Georgia's current government" but continues to support the people of the republic, it added.

The domestic political situation in Georgia and the country's relations with the EU escalated after parliamentary elections in October 2024, which were won by the ruling Georgian Dream party with 53.93 percent of the vote. The opposition accused its rivals of fraud and refused to recognize the election results, and on November 28 the authorities suspended the process of European integration, which provoked mass protests. The protests were violently suppressed by security forces, including the use of tear gas and water cannons. At least 400 people were detained, Transparency International Georgia estimated.
