In Russia, The Head Of The Supreme Court Died In Office

This is the second case in two years.

Chairman of Russia's Supreme Court Irina Podnosova has died in Moscow at the age of 72, a source in her entourage told TASS. The agency's interlocutor specified that Podnosova passed away after a serious illness. According to RBC, she had been battling an illness for more than a year, but with what kind, it is not reported. Podnosova was appointed to head the Supreme Court on April 17, 2024, her candidacy was nominated by Putin. She took over the court after the death of its previous chairman, Vyacheslav Lebedev, who held the post from 1991 to 2024, writes The Moscow Times.

Podnosova has worked at the Supreme Court since 2020, when she was appointed deputy chairman of the Supreme Court and chairman of the judicial panel for economic disputes. Before that, she headed the Second Court of Appeal and the Leningrad Regional Court. Podnosova was born in Pskov in 1953. In 1975, she graduated from the Faculty of Law of Leningrad State University (now St. Petersburg State University). She studied in the same course with Putin and the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin.

At the very beginning of Putin's presidency, Podnosova often shared memories from her student life. In December 2001, she told Moskovsky Komsomolets about how the university celebrated the last New Year's Eve. "Everyone dressed up in masquerade costumes, and Volodka came in an unassuming suit. "This is a Stirlitz outfit," he commented," Podnosova recalled. According to her, that New Year's Eve all the guys found a date, and only Putin left the party alone. "Volodka liked modest girls, and at such events gathered the most active. And we, frankly speaking, did not like him as a man. He didn't dance at discos, but stood by the wall and talked to the guys. We chose guys who were a bit more active," said a classmate of the Russian president.
