"Belaruskali" came under international sanctions in 2021.
Lithuania is not discussing the resumption of transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers through its territory, as such supplies fall under the sanctions of the United States and the European Union. This was stated by the chief advisor to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on environment and infrastructure Ramunas Dilba, reports news agency BNS.
And even if the US and EU sanctions are lifted, Lithuania has legal tools within the framework of national legislation to "protect its interests."
"If we see that the company profits from the transit of fertilizers and possibly indirectly finances [Russia's military actions in Ukraine] or strengthens [Alexander Lukashenko's] regime, it is against Lithuania's national interests, in which case we could apply our national legal tools when making decisions," Dilba stresses.
Last week, reports emerged that the Klaipeda port's bulk cargo terminal is in favor of resuming the transit of Belarusian fertilizers through Lithuania. The relevant proposal was allegedly sent by the terminal management to the Lithuanian government. The explanation proposed to focus "on ensuring global food security, reducing dependence on fertilizer exports from Russia, as well as reducing Russia's income from the logistics of Belarusian potash."
Belaruskali fell under international sanctions back in 2021.
