The Kremlin is stumped by a lack of money.
During an economic forum in Russia, government officials recognized serious problems. Vladimir Putin said he would cut military spending but wants to keep fighting.
The Kremlin chief has long intimidated his people. As "24 Kanal" Doctor of Economics Igor Lipsits noted, as early as 2022 they have been forbidden to use the word "war".
"The Russian dictator's entourage is panicking. People in Russia are so intimidated that even the highest vertical of power is afraid to say anything," Igor Lipsits added.
It was only after Putin said he would cut spending that other officials started talking about it. Before that, they pretended that everything was supposedly in order. Such behavior looks comical.
"The economy is really in dire straits. All the worst predictions are already coming true. People in Putin's entourage are afraid that the economy will collapse and they will be blamed for it," emphasized Igor Lipsits.
"That's why they are trying to do something in advance. It is very scary to cut military spending, because then the military will come to Putin and say they refuse to fight. On the other hand, the dictator realizes that he can no longer give his army as much as it demands.
Budget revenues are formed by taxes. Now it is very difficult to deal with them, the revenues of Russian companies have seriously decreased. Industries that are connected with oil and gas are not so profitable and cannot provide enough money to the budget.
Putin is now likely to try to cut the least important types of military spending. If he fails, he will have to reduce spending on the civilian sector. This is unlikely to please Russians, who are already dissatisfied with the state of affairs.
"It looks like it is becoming very expensive to fight, and Putin is afraid not to fight. That's why he is in a deadlock and doesn't know how to get out of it," Lipsits summarized.
