Beijing has decided to raise duties on cognac and brandy from Europe by a third.
China has joined the trade war with the European Union: duties on cognac and brandy from Europe will be raised by a third. Such a decision on Friday, July 4, was made by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce following an investigation into brandy imports from the EU.
According to the agency, from July 5, China will increase duties on these products for five years. The largest increase - by 34.9 percent - will affect Hennessy, for Remy Martin and Martell it will amount to 34.3 percent and 27.7 percent, respectively. The decision is final.
Some spirits producers who have pledged to keep to the lower price point - among them Pernod Ricard and Remy Cointreau - will be exempted from the increased rate as long as they honor their commitments.
French cognac producers earn 98 percent of their revenue through exports. Their biggest buyer, the United States, accounts for 38 percent of shipments, with China in second place with 25 percent.
Antidumping proceedings against European brandy, much of which is French-produced cognac, were opened by Beijing in 2024. This was in response to the European Union's consideration of raising duties on Chinese-made electric cars.
