Bloomberg: Germany Transferred A Quarter Of Its Patriot Systems To Ukraine

Berlin is in talks with the United States on the issue.

Germany is negotiating with the United States on the delivery of at least two additional Patriot surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine. This is reported by Bloomberg.

It is noted that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss, among other things, how to provide Ukraine with more air defense systems. An official familiar with the matter told the publication that the Mertz government is ready to supply Ukraine with two additional Patriot systems, including interceptor missiles. Germany is also ready to cover all the costs of the deliveries.

The official said that the deliveries will be possible thanks to a bilateral agreement between Germany and the United States. He added that Berlin offered such an agreement to Washington a few weeks ago. The decision now rests with Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth.

"Germany has been pushing for months for the U.S. to hand over at least one more Patriot system to Ukraine to help close a gap in its air defense system as Russia steps up a barrage of attacks. Along with demanding that NATO member states pay more for their own defense, Trump has called on European countries to shoulder more of the burden of providing military support to Ukraine. Air defenses have become more urgent for Kiev, whose supplies are being depleted as Moscow steps up its attacks on Ukrainian cities," the piece said.

Merz spokesman Stefan Cornelius, referring to whether the German government was in talks with the United States over such an agreement, said there were "different ways" to meet Ukraine's air defense needs:

"I can say that there are indeed intense discussions going on about this."

The publication adds that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will visit Washington on July 14-15 for talks with his U.S. counterpart. According to a defense official, Patriot systems will also be on the agenda.

"To date, Germany has sent three Patriot systems from its own stockpile to Ukraine. That amounts to a quarter of Berlin's arsenal, and is a larger share of its own Patriot batteries than the U.S. has sent to Kiev. Germany has also offered to lead joint European Union projects on air defense, land and sea systems as the bloc builds up its own military deterrence against Russian aggression," Bloomberg states.
