The fighters are assisted in this endeavor by fishermen.
Ukrainian defenders catch enemy drones with fishing nets. Experts say that this solution is not a novelty, but it is very effective in the fight against drones. Such fishing nets can be seen over checkpoints, artillery positions and roads leading to hot spots, according to The New York Times.
These nets are usually given to AFU fighters by fishermen, they are woven in the rear and delivered from ports. Because of the dense weave of such nets, enemy drones are usually entangled in them with their propellers.
More than that, fishermen's nets are very effective in the battle against drones on fiber optics, which are not afraid of REB systems.
The head of the communications department of the AFU engineering forces Maksim Kravchuk said that such nets are spread along the entire front line.
Center for European Policy Analysis Federico Borsari said that the Russian Federation was the first to use such nets on the frontline back in 2023, but not on such a large scale as the AFU.
And while earlier along the roads along the frontline one could see a lot of trenches, trenches and barbed wire, today it is fishing nets. Ukraine is trying to entangle hundreds of kilometers of roads with these nets.
In 2025 alone, the Swedish organization OperationChange has donated 250 tons of fishing nets to Ukraine.
