The Economist edition gave an assessment.

U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to resume arms deliveries to Ukraine does not mean that he is making a strategic U-turn toward consistent support for Ukraine - rather, it is a temporary concession to avoid its complete defeat, which could be a reputational disaster for the White House chief himself, writes The Economist.

The publication recalls that when the United States stopped supplying arms to Ukraine in early July, it shocked both Ukraine and its European allies. But already on July 7, Trump suddenly changed his mind, motivating his decision by the fact that Ukraine must defend itself. A few hours later, the Pentagon confirmed that it would send "additional defensive weapons."

The Pentagon's explanation that the halt in arms deliveries was due to the alleged need to review stocks, the publication called "mostly disinformation."

"Yes, there is a shortage of air defense assets, but the weapons for Ukraine come from the production lines of contractors, not from U.S. Army warehouses. Israel, for example, continued to receive weapons without interruption even during the war with Iran," the piece said.

The publication believes that Trump humiliated the Pentagon by reversing its decision on Ukraine, and this change in the US president's position shows that "even close associates cannot foresee Trump's sharp turns."

At the same time, this move of his, it is noted, is a victory for common sense, because Ukraine has recently been experiencing the most intense shelling since the beginning of the Russian invasion, and to stop American support would be to effectively allow the aggressor to do whatever it wants with impunity.

But, it is noted, one should not think that Trump has suddenly become a supporter of Ukraine. They say that the resumption of supplies is just a return to the previous state, when the aid allocated by the previous president Joe Biden was phased out gradually. Trump himself has not yet made any statements about his intention to help Ukraine.

"Tens of billions of dollars in aid approved by Congress last year have yet to be disbursed. Nor has Congress provided any new funds. There is no money for Ukraine in the "big beautiful" fiscal bill signed by Trump. Even the small amounts that were in the Pentagon's base budget are slated to be cut even further in the 2026 draft," the article said.

But at least Trump has realized that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is just using him. The U.S. president doesn't want to spend more money to win Ukraine, but he also doesn't want it to fail under his presidency. Probably, one assumes, he realizes that the collapse of Ukraine would be a geopolitical disaster for the US, even worse than the fall of Afghanistan in 2021.
