CNN publishes audio of the statements.
Last year, Donald Trump said in a private donor meeting that he once tried to keep Vladimir Putin from attacking Ukraine. He threatened to "bomb the hell out of Moscow."
This is reported by CNN, which publishes audio of the statement.
"I told Putin, 'If you invade Ukraine, I will bomb the hell out of Moscow.' I'm telling you, I have no choice,'" Trump said during one of his 2024 fundraising events.
According to the audio recording, Putin responded that he didn't believe Trump. "But he believed me 10 percent," Trump revealed.
Later, Trump said he delivered a similar warning to Chinese President Si Jinping regarding a possible invasion of Taiwan, telling him that the U.S. would bomb Beijing in response.
"He thought I was crazy," Trump said of Xi, then added that "we never had a problem."
Trump's statements
These remarks came as Trump was running for a second term. They were recorded at 2024 charity events in New York and Florida.
They were subsequently obtained by Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager and Aizek Arnsdorf, who detailed some of those conversations in their new book "2024." In May, Josh Dawsey released Trump's statement about Putin's threats to "bomb Moscow" to The Washington Post. However, the audio recordings themselves have not been previously published.
