The Activatica media project has released a new movie of the series "Prisoners: The System of Terror" - about the system of terror built by Russia in the occupied Ukrainian territories.
The project's press service informed the website Charter97.org.
The Activatika team learned about the disappearance of people in the occupied territories in the first weeks of the war: many refugees told about their relatives and friends who were stopped at a checkpoint, went out into the street and disappeared, or were kidnapped from their homes.
At first it seemed that these were isolated cases, but the more testimonies we heard, the more we realized that we were not talking about exceptions, but about the rule.
"Since 2023, it has become clear that there is a single System behind the disappearances of people in the occupied territories. And the System, as we know, always has a scheme. Together with Ukrainian and Russian human rights defenders and activists, we collected evidence and were able to draw a scheme of this System," emphasizes the Activatika team.
This is a film about how the System of Terror is organized: what happens to a person after abduction, what he has to go through - and whether there is a chance to get out.
Beatings, torture, total isolation from the world, no contact with family and lawyers, years spent in basements and prisons without trial - or show trials on trumped-up charges of "terrorism" and "espionage".
This System is not new. Its roots go back to the Soviet past, it was formed during the wars in Chechnya, and now it is being implemented in Ukraine. It is a carefully constructed machine of suppression that exists in parallel with the official justice system - and outside the law.
The exact number of civilian prisoners is impossible to say. Human rights activists estimate that there are between 7,000 and 30,000 civilian prisoners in Russian captivity today.
The film was created by the Activatika media project team - to give a voice to those who have been deprived of freedom and the opportunity to be heard. To prevent such terrible deaths as in the cases of Viktoria Roschina and Tatiana Plachkova. And to try to find an answer to the main question: how to escape from this System?
